How RF Microneedling Works: Collagen, Heat, and Healing

← All articles

RF microneedling combines two proven mechanisms — mechanical microneedling and radiofrequency energy — to remodel skin from within. Understanding how they work together helps you explain results to patients and set the right expectations.

Step one: controlled micro-injuries

Ultra-fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body's natural wound-healing response. This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin — the structural proteins that restore firmness and elasticity as we lose them with age.

Step two: radiofrequency heat

As the needles reach the target depth, radiofrequency energy is delivered deep into the dermis, generating heat that tightens existing collagen fibers while encouraging further remodeling. This thermal effect is what separates RF microneedling from traditional microneedling: it drives tightening and texture improvement at a level needles alone can't reach.

Why frequency and wavelength matter

Newera's device operates at a 1 MHz frequency — one million cycles per second. The longer wavelength travels deeper before dissipating, creating more uniform thermal diffusion through the dermis. Collagen contraction and new collagen formation are best stimulated with this broader volumetric heating rather than sharp focal spikes, and controlled heating forms micro-coagulation points that trigger repair without excess inflammation.

What patients can expect

Downtime is minimal — most patients experience slight redness and sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours, then resume normal activities. Some improvement is visible after a single session, but optimal results typically build over a series of three to five treatments spaced a few weeks apart, with progressive tightening over time.
